MSV announces new educational offering at 2009 annual meeting
MSV announces a new addition to its Annual Meeting agenda for 2009. This year, attendees can participate in two informational sessions, both including a keynote speaker and panel discussion. Sessions will focus on differences between generations of physicians and on national health care reform.
Session 1:
Why Can’t They Be Like We Were? Differences Between Generations of Physicians
Four very different generations of physicians now work alongside each other in Virginia’s clinics, groups and hospitals. At best, differences in work ethic and communication styles cause confusion; at worst, they engender antagonism, compromising job satisfaction and patient outcomes. How do differing perceptions of time, reward, life balance and technology play out in the workplace and during the current health care reform debate?
A one-hour presentation by Amy Lynch, expert in this field, will be followed by a 45-minute panel discussion including physicians of different generations including: Robert P. Nirschl, M.D. (Traditionalist), Randolph J. Gould, M.D. (Baby Boomer), Cynthia Romero, M.D. (Generation X) and medical student Katie Dorfler (Generation Y).
Session 2:
National Health Care Reform
Most agree that change is needed. Reaching agreement on what a new health care system should look like, however, is an ongoing challenge for legislators, citizens and even for physicians. Sit in on this session and you will get an update on what is happening with health care reform and the “whys” behind the actions we see in Washington, D.C.
A half-hour presentation by Rich Deem of the American Medical Association will be followed by a panel discussion that will explore the various perspectives of specialty societies across Virginia. Panel participants include: C. Michael Valentine, M.D. (American College of Cardiology, Virginia chapter), Richard A. Szucs, M.D. (American College of Radiologists - Virginia Chapter), David A. Ellington, M.D. (Virginia Academy of Family Physicians), Garth Stevens Jr., M.D. (Virginia Society of Eye Physicians and Surgeons) and Colleen A. Kraft, M.D. (American Academy of Pediatrics, Virginia Chapter).
